Kintsugi – The art of transforming scars into beauty

Kintsugi – The art of transforming scars into beauty
By Debby Calleja

When something in our house breaks, our first reaction is to get upset and throw it away because for us it’s no longer useful and it has now lost its value. Yet in reality, there is an alternative way of doing this and that is Kintsugi!

Kintsugi is a centuries-old Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. It has adopted many names over time like “golden joinery” and “Kintsukuroi” which is where Kintsugi was derived from. This innovative approach to fixing damaged artefacts serves as a symbol of beauty in accepting what is flawed and imperfect.

The philosophy behind kintsugi can be seen as a method of keeping an object around even after it has been broken, rather than getting rid of it because it has stopped serving its purpose, highlighting the scars of the broken item can be seen as events in the lifetime of the object. This also gives new life to the pottery and a whole new perspective. The scars will now become the object of exhibition, creating a truly beautiful work of art.

The influence of Kintsugi on contemporary art!
Art reflects life, we all get hammered and we all need to mend our broken pieces. Bringing different aspects of fragmented parts of ourselves together.
Modern artists and designers have taken on this method to give meaning to their artwork as a means of symbolising the idea of loss and improvement through repair or rebirth. Kintsugi has been incorporated into many art exhibitions all over the world and used by famous artists.

The positive messages it conveys
All things are created and destined to be broken at some point. Japanese Kintsugi teaches us that broken objects are not something to hide but we should display them with pride. It also shows us that when something breaks we should try to repair it because sometimes, in doing so, we unravel a more valuable object.
It also tells us that we should all look for ways to cope with negative events in our lives in a positive way, learning from these experiences and taking the best out of the situation, convincing ourselves that it is these bad experiences that make us each one of us unique and precious. Scars should never be hidden; imperfections can be the birth of something new.

Now you can also make this a part of your life and experience the feeling of turning something that was otherwise going to be thrown away into something beautiful. With the new Kintsugi Repair Kit sold at Copper & Plush, you will get an old technique combined with new technology to give you a more modern take on repairing your broken artefact.
With the kit, you will get an easy step-by-step process, which will not only result in a new stunning art piece, but you get to enjoy the fulfilment of having restored it yourself, giving it more meaning and making it more precious than it was before.
